Reading Notes: PDE Mahabharata, Part A
Hi everyone!
So I am honestly pretty confused with the whole family tree of the Mahabharata. I am also having trouble keeping up with the names. I found this family tree to help me, but I am still struggling.
Devavrata: (later called Bhishma) son of King Shantanu and the goddess Ganga.
3 Daughters: Amba, Ambika, and Ambalika
Dhritarashtra: (half-brother) Pandu. Ambika and Vyasa are parents. Born blind
Gandhari : wife of Dhritarashta. mother of a hundred sons, the eldest of whom was Duryodhana. These were the princes who were named the Kauravas
Duryodhana
Pandu: Ambalika and Vyasa are parents. Born pale
Vidura: Vyasa and Ambika's housemaid's child. Human reincarnation of god dharma
Karna: son of Kunti (Pandu's wife) and Surya? the sun god. Fostered by Radha, and her husband Adhiratha
Pandava brothers: Kunti was mother of Yudhishthira, son of Dharma, god of justice, and of Bhima, son of Vayu, the wind god, and also of Arjuna, son of mighty Indra, monarch of heaven. Madri became the mother of Nakula and Sahadeva, whose sires were the twin Ashwins, sons of Surya, the sun god.
Drona: brahmin at birth
Ekalavya: he son of the rajah of the robber Bhils.
Bibliography: PDE Mahabharata by Arnold, Besant, Devee, Dutt, Ganguli, Kincaid, Macfie, Mackenzie, Nivedita, Seeger, and Tagore. link here
